Criteria Lists for Art and writing

Criteria for Short Stories  (Solarpunk):  

Length must be between 500-2000 words. *

                                            Climate Solutions

1. The story depicts renewable energy, sustainable transportation, regenerative farming &/or other solutions to the climate crisis that are rooted in contemporary scientific innovations    /3    

2.  The story demonstrates cultural/social/community solutions to the climate crisis (i.e. people are living more communally; resources are shared equally, etc.)     /3

3.  The story shows how the natural world and biodiversity might be restored      /3

                                              Storywriting

4. The plot has an arc with a beginning, middle, and end and a problem which gets solved      /3

5.  The character(s) are well-developed and believable. The main character changes, grows, or learns something.     /3

6. Writing is strong and clear     /3.   (Grammar, paragraphing, use of language)

*NOTE: We will not consider any story written, developed or assisted by AI writing tools such as ChatGPT.  

Note: In a solarpunk (hopeful, better) future, there is improved social justice.

Jury: use this scale of  0-3 for each criteria point above

0 - the story is missing this item.

1 - the story shows some of this.

2 - the story is good at showing this criteria.

3 - the story excels in this area. Outstanding.  

o  Criteria for Art:   Youth Imagine the Future 

(Dimensions: Generally, it should be under 50cmx50cmx50cm but larger than 20cm2) 

(Email us if your art might be larger.)

We are not looking for art that simply shows us the Climate Crisis.  Show us solutions and a better, possible future.  Inspire us. This is "solarpunk art" or "hopeful eco-art."  This year, artists may focus on a theme, eg. Biodiversity or something from Criteria #1. If one theme is chosen, state that theme in your brief Artist Statement on your form.

You need not balance all of the first 3 criteria below equally. However, all 3 must be included in your art somehow. 

In your 150 word (max) Art Statement, explain how you met the first 3 criteria in your art, what you are specifically showing through your art.

                                    Read these criteria carefully:

1. The artwork demonstrates that the artist researched solutions for the future of their chosen region on Earth and has specifically imagined how: people will create electricity &/or transportation &/or food &/or how our sense of community might improve. (eg. buildings/housing or celebrations, etc.) The artwork could focus on one, some, or all of these topics.        /3           

2. The artwork represents how the natural world and biodiversity might be restored    /3      

3. The artwork shows a more socially just future. Symbols may be used.  / 2

4. The artist(s)'s work is compelling and unique. The artwork shows the artist's vision and makes viewers think.  /3

5.  Art:   Effectiveness in the use of the elements (line, shape, texture, space, value, form, colour) and principles (balance, emphasis, movement, proportion, contrast, unity, variety, repetition, pattern, rhythm) of design.     /3
